Venice Beach, in 1965, is the equivalent
to the Haight Ashbury district in San Francisco attracting hippies, artists,
longhairs, and weirdos. LSD is legal at this time and is available at any
one of the many local headshops. Jim would hangout around the beach some,
but mostly stayed on the rooftop digesting large quantities of LSD and
writing profusely.
"He
said he'd be happy if people remembered him five years after he was dead
- and he really meant that. He wanted to be cremated and scattered over
Venice Beach. That's where the whole thing had started, and he liked the
idea of ending up there as floatsam." - Patricia Kennealy
"In the beginning we were creating our music, ourselves, everynight . .
. starting with a few outlines, maybe a few words for a song. Sometimes
we worked out in Venice, looking at the surf. We were together a lot and
it was good times for all of us. Acid, sun, friends, the ocean, and poetry
and music." - Jim Morrison
